Juliet Moments

I really appreciated Ms. Malone's discussion last night...especially the connection made about the "Juliet moments" we have in our own lives...when we follow our own passions despite resistance from family or other life forces. Thank you to the Maryvale Junior who "took to the stage" and sang Taylor Swift's song "Love Story" acapella- it was beautiful! I had tears in my eyes!

Here are discussed options for the next book club selection:
Run (Ann Patchett)
Light Falling on Snow (Is this the correct title? Couldn't find it in my search.)
Finbar's Hotel (Dermot Bolger)

What do you think? Post your comments!

The association of the elements in this book - which at first blush is probably the farthest thing from Romeo & Juliet imaginable - with "Juliet" moments where a girl has THE disagreement with her father that starts her on her own path instead of his path for her was so amazing. It made me think about the Juliet moment(s) in my own life... not that they always have to be as dramatic as marrying the "unsuitable" boy etc (I think one of my own was when I decided to buy my Volvo over the more sensibly priced Toyota against my father's warning it was "too much car" for me). Though I can identify some in my own life - the whole idea of it makes me wonder whether Juliet moments are necessary. What is one never has a Juliet moment? What a travesty that would be!

As always, Miss Malone's guided discussion of the book made me want to finish what I'd started in reading it. Though I'm looking forward to the next (lighter) book, I appreciate the exposure to something I might not have been driven to read on my own!

I so enjoyed Ms. Malone's surprise guest at the last book club! The Maryvale junior who sang Taylor Swift's "Love Story" was absolutely fantastic! What a treat it was to see one of Maryvale's finest and listen to her take on how Romeo & Juliet applies to every day life. I've now downloaded the song to my itunes and smile every time I hear it! Can't wait for next book club to see what Ms. Malone has in store next!
